High on Bülbül Mountain, the House of the Virgin Mary is a small stone shrine surrounded by forest. The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasuluk Hill, one of the earliest settlement areas of Ephesus. Christian tradition places the tomb of John here. The Temple of Artemis—Artemision—was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world and a pilgrimage focus known far beyond Ephesus. Very little of the enormous sanctuary now stands above ground.
